Signature Hardwoods - French Oak Live Tree

French oak flooring is a natural product. Like every tree, each board is unique with its own individual character. This is, after all, the attraction of real wood, and therefore it will never be dated. Over the years, your French oak floors will mature and the color will gradually darken, increasing in richness and depth.

Not to be confused with domestic red or white oak, our imported French oak comes from responsibly managed forests in France and Western and Eastern Europe. The lumber is naturally air aged outdoors for a period of 3 to 5 years, then kiln dried slowly for 6 to 8 weeks for added stability. No chemicals are used in this process. The resulting lumber is then selected for character marks that include closed and open knots, natural splits and color variations. Our floors are manufactured from rustic lumber, designated as “Vintage” grade by Signature Hardwoods.

French oak is our favorite, chosen for its durability, beauty and practicality. Prized for its beautiful warm color, unmatched stability, fine uniform texture and tight grain, it’s the oldest and most versatile wood flooring known to man. These qualities make it an ideal choice for upscale commercial spaces and high-end private residences.

We know our products will complement and enhance the character and warmth of your home.

Benefits of Vintage French Oak flooring:

  • Warm to the touch
  • Hard wearing and long-lasting
  • Hygienic – prevents dust allergies
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Timeless – improves with age
  • Practical – natural character marks hide accidental dents or scratches
  • Versatile – stains, oils, waxes, polyurethane or water-based lacquer finishes can be applied

French oak flooring is a stunning feature in any room. It’s a style that features both taste and character. Our Vintage French Oak wide plank flooring blends old world character with casual elegance, making it the discerning choice for your flooring.

Signature Hardwax Oil Finish

Our bespoke handcrafted hardwood floors are sealed with renewable UV-cured or oxidizing hardwax oil finishes. The hardwax oil is an all-natural, non-pollutant, non-toxic, no-or-low VOC product with no biocides or preservatives and is lead-benzene free. The oil is produced in Europe from natural materials such as vegetable oil and natural waxes made from purified renewable, natural raw resources. The wood’s open grain structure allows the floor to breathe. This has a regulatory effect on moisture, ensuring a healthy room climate, keeping within the spirit of wood’s natural hydroscopic characteristics. The special features of this finish allow its oils to penetrate deeply into the wood pores to enhance, while the wax remains on the surface, maintaining a beautiful natural satin-matte finish and creating a protective layer that offers a resistant and lasting finish. In essence, the wax is bonded to the wood via the oil. By finishing the wood with hardwax oil, the ultimate color of the floor will be enhanced and flourish with time.

Hardwax oil has the most environmentally friendly benefits as a wood finish and contributes to a healthier living environment. A hardwax oil finish is water repellent and does not watermark, and will not crack, flake, peel, blister or panelize like polyurethane or water-based (laminated plastic looking) finishes. The hardwax oil is stain-resistant against wine, beer, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juices and milk. Our hardwax oil finish is virtually maintenance-free and should not be confused with regular oil or wax finishes that require monthly maintenance and buffing.

Compared to the commonly used polymerized or “plastic” finishes today, such as polyurethane oil, water-based finishes, and ceramic and aluminum-oxides, hardwax oil is easily and readily repairable, allowing for spot repairs. In contrast, “plastic” finishes are not spot-repairable. In order to repair any damage to a “plastic” finished floor, it is necessary to completely sand and refinish the whole floor, regardless of size, and at substantial expense and inconvenience. Furthermore, “plastic” finished floors need to be re-sanded approximately every 7-10 years. Re-sanding is not needed when a floor is finished with hardwax oil. The application of the hardwax oil does not create any air pollution; there is no dust and no odor. We recommend that your floor is refreshed every 5 to 10 years or as needed. In high traffic applications such as commercial and industrial floors, refreshing is recommended more often. When it’s time to refresh your floor, simply re-apply another coat of hardwax oil and allow it to dry for 12 to 24 hours.

With proper care, using approved maintenance oils and soaps, your floor will last a lifetime and maintain its genuine natural beauty. It will even develop with time as the patina enriches itself with your maintenance.
